Two hours flew by just like that and I found myself out on the back patio, seated at a large table with Tina and Joe.

It was awkward at first, partly due to the fact that not more than ten yards behind Tina was the hot tub. I couldn’t help but flashback to the previous night whenever I happened to glance at it.

“So, let me ask you a question, since you seem to know Tina pretty well,” Joe said to me, wearing his now all too common smile. “Does she have anything scandalous in her past that I can hold over her?”

Tina rolled her eyes.

“You mean the little angel sitting beside you?” I asked. Tina smirked at me.

“Angel?” Joe said. “Are you sure we’re talking about the same Tina?”

“Ha, ha, guys. Keep it up and you’ll really see my bad side,” Tina replied.

“Oh honey, I was only teasing. I didn’t expect Frank to say anything bad about my baby.” He leaned in and smooched her on the cheek.

I started to get indigestion.

“So, how’s work been going for you?” Joe asked me without warning.

“Not too bad. When it comes, that is,” I answered honestly. I knew Joe was only making polite conversation, but I wish he’d change the subject.

“He’s the best there is,” Tina said.

I found myself blushing at the compliment.

“Well, if you need any referrals, I can ask around the office,” Joe said.

I did a quick check of his face to make sure he wasn’t being some kind of sarcastic dumbass. He may’ve been Tina’s husband, but that didn’t give him some kind of free pass to poke jabs at me. Maybe I was being too sensitive, but the last thing I wanted was any kind of pity.

“Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind.”

“You’re welcome. It’d be the least I could do. You know, Tina’s talked an awful lot about you. No worries, it’s been nothing but praise.”

Tina grinned at me rather sheepishly, like Joe was revealing some secret.

“She’s told me you got her through some rough patches. That if it wasn’t for you, I might not be the lucky man I am today.”

“Joe, there’s no need to exaggerate,” Tina said.

“What, can’t a man be thankful? After all, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not always here. I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m just glad she has someone to talk to. And I appreciate that.”

Tina took him by the hand. How in the hell did this suddenly turn into a therapy session. “It’s okay, I know you’re working hard. You’ve given me a beautiful house, a feeling of security. What more can a girl ask for?”

Time, for starters, I wanted to say, but I kept the thought to myself.

As I watched them kiss an ache began to form in the pit of my stomach. It rapidly spread throughout my body and I came to a realization. I was jealous.

Not just a simple jealousy that might be confused with a feeling a momentary lust or desire.

No, this was real.

I couldn’t help it.
